The brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> produces embryos (cysts) in a state of obligate dormancy called diapause. Diapause is terminated by a variety of treatments, including dehydration. Previous work suggested that some cysts can be induced to reenter diapause when exposed to prolonged anoxia. Results presented in this paper indicate that heat shock (42-43°C) can also lead to diapause induction. The basis for this proposal is the finding that the final hatching level of heat-shocked cysts is increased by a post-heat dehydration, a treatment known to terminate diapause. The respiration rate of postheat-shocked cysts was found to be much lower than controls. Electrophoretic profiles of proteins in extracts from control and heatshocked cysts suggest... |

The genera of the subfamily Cenocoeliinae Szépligeti are revised, keyed and illustrated. The genera Capitonius Brullé, 1846, Aulacodes Cresson, 1865, Lestricus Reinhard, 1866, Promachus Cresson, 1887, and Evaniomorpha Szépligeti, 1901, are re-instated. One new genus is described and illustrated: Rattana (type species: Cenocoelius albopilosellus Cameron, 1901) from Sulawesi, Misoöl, and New Guinea. The genus Ussurohelcon Belokobylskij, 1989, is transferred from the Helconinae to the Cenocoeliinae and placed in the new tribe Ussurohelconini. The following new synonyms are given: Iseurini Hedqvist, 1959, with Cenocoeliini Szépligeti, 1901; Iseura Spinola, 1853, with Capitonius Brullé, 1846; Cenocoelius bicolor Szépligeti, 1900, with Rattana indidiator (Smith,... |

Buyer complaints about poor quality U.S. wheat have led to proposals to enforce minimum dockage standards for exports. An economic-engineering approach is used to evaluate costs and benefits of cleaning wheat in order to meet these standards for 13 possible cleaning configurations. These results are used in an optimization framework to estimate costs and benefits of cleaning all U.S. export wheat. The estimates indicate that cleaning U.S. export winter wheat to .35% dockage would cost an average of 1 cent/bu., requiring an initial capital investment of $28 million. Value of wheat lost in cleaning is a significant cost that previously has been overlooked. |

The recreational site choice decision modeled in most economic analyses seldom contains previous experience with the site as a characteristic or attribute. A rational dynamic model is used to incorporate previous experience with the site in a model of the choice of recreation sites. Based on the comparison of dynamic and static models, it is apparent that dynamic elements influence choice. The use of previous consumption as an attribute (either in a naïve or rational form) is an improvement over static models of choice. In welfare analysis, this effect may be a significant factor. For example, a change in prices or quality attributes may have a much larger impact on those individuals who have developed habits. |

Trees, shrubs or lianas, rarely herbaceous climbers; monoecious, rarely dioecious or polygamous. Indumentum usually of solitary, simple hairs, sometimes also of two-branched hairs, stellate bundles of hairs, or scale hairs (then young parts, buds, and inflorescences viscid). Leaves spirally arranged, rarely opposite or whorled, simple, biternate, digitate or (bi)pinnate; true stipules usually absent, pseudo-stipules sometimes present. Leaflets alternate to opposite, symmetric to distinctly asymmetric, entire or dentate to serrate or crenate. Inflorescences axillary, often together pseudoterminal, terminal or ramiflorous, thyrsoid, with or without branches; bracts and bracteoles present. Flowers usually unisexual, rarely bisexual, actinomorphic or... |

A quantity surcharge exists when the unit cost of a given brand is higher for a large-size package than for a smaller one. This paper examines some product and household characteristics that influence observed quantity surcharging practices. Results indicate that the propensity to buy a large-size package of a product is positively influenced by the extent of a household's usage of that product, procurement cost, and carrying capacity, and is negatively influenced by the propensity to price search. A retailer's decision to levy a quantity surcharge is, in turn, influenced by the demand for the product, the propensity to buy large-size packages, and to some extent the product's carrying cost. |

The occurrence of Ramys cf. perezi in the Miocene sequences of the Central Ebro Basin allows to locate the Aragonian-Vallesian transition (Late Miocene) in the alluvial and lacustrine sequences which make up the upper part of the basin sediments in the Sierra Alcubierre. These new data determine the age of the upper genetic unit defined in the central basin sectors, and mark the relationships between the Ebro Basin faunal assemblages and those from other Spanish basins included in the Central Iberian palaeobiogeographic province (e.g. Teruel and Duero Basins). |
